Continuing our Discussion of Community Safety

One of my policy priorities is increasing community safety through a variety of means, not just policing. On Tuesday, June 20, 2023, the Iowa City city council continued our discussion of community safety, through the lens of our December 2020 Preliminary Plan to Restructure the Police.

On Tuesday, June 20, 2023, the Iowa City city council continued our discussion of community safety, talking with Police Chief Dustin Liston about preventing calls for service, diverting non-violent calls to unarmed professionals, and relieving pressure on the police department.

And check out the beginning of the meeting if you want to hear about our changes to the urban chicken ordinance! Spoilers: notify your neighbors but they can no longer veto your chicken ownership; number of permitted hens increased to six. These changes will be effective once we vote to amend the ordinance probably later this summer. Do you remember when urban chickens was the hottest topic in Iowa City?! Thanks to the citizen advocacy of a group called I-CLUCK, chickens have been permitted in Iowa City since 2012.
